CIMSS GOES/GOES-R LAP Validation Tool (Operational for GOES-16 and Provisional for GOES-17)

This website was developed and is maintained by Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Sounding Team at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

This website is developed for operational GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) Legacy Atmospheric profile (LAP) retrieval product validation, and is currently applied to GOES-16 (east), GOES-17 (west), and LAP research products (clear only and all sky) are also generated with the GOES-R ABI LAP algorithm in CIMSS GEOstationary Cloud Algorithm Test-bed (GEOCAT) frame. The reference dataset include GPS-IPW NOAA network, conventional RAOB sites, MWR and RAOB measurements at ARM CART site, and AMSR2 TPW measurement. The validation focuses on parameters such as TPW, atmospheric stability indices, temperature/water vapor profiles between the retrievals and the reference datasets.

For more information about GOES-16/17 LAP sounding product maturity, please see NCEI/NOAA.

Funding is provided by NOAA GOES-R algorithm working group (AWG) program through the cooperative agreement between NOAA and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Disclaimer: This validation tool is experimental and research based. Users should take their own responsibility for using this. Due to the loop heat pipe issue, use of GOES-17 LAP sounding products is suggested for 18 - 08 UTC only.
