CIMSS GOES/GOES-R LAP Validation Tool (Provisional Stage)

This website was developed and is maintained by Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Sounding Team at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

This website is for GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) Legacy Atmospheric profile (LAP) retrieval validation, and is currently based on GOES-15 (WEST) & GOES-13 (EAST) Sounder measurements as proxy of GOES-R ABI measurement. Once GOES-R is launched in 2016, GOES-R ABI LAP product validation will be included.

Funding is provided by NOAA GOES-R algorithm working group (AWG) program through the cooperative agreement between NOAA and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Real-time GOES Sounder (and coming GOES-R ABI) LAP products are generated with GOES-R ABI LAP algorithm in CIMSS GEOstationary Cloud Algorithm Test-bed (GEOCAT) frame.  The reference dataset comes from GPS-IPW NOAA network, conventional RAOB sites, MWR and RAOB measurements at ARM CART site, and AMSR2 TPW measurement. The validation is based on the comparison of TPW, atmospheric stability indices, temperature/water vapor profiles between the retrievals and the reference datasets.
